Addressing the Gaps in Today’s High School System
High school is a great time. You make lifelong friendships, create memories, and have many foundational experiences that ultimately shape your future. But just like everything, there are a few gaps in the high school system that have yet to be addressed. While I can understand that these things might be difficult to implement on a wide-scale basis, I believe that students can be proactive in striving to address the problems to unlock their potential before starting university or even during!
1) Lack of Real-Life Job Experience
The funny thing is that in high school, at the ripe age of 17–18, we’re expected to make a decision about what we want to do for the rest of our lives. Now that you’ve pulled the trigger and made a big decision about your major, you start university, which is nothing like the job you’ll be doing. So, to regulate your expectations about what your future job will actually look like, there are a few steps you can take to be one step ahead. The reality is that most employers won’t take a student with no experience. So how do you get a job if you have no past employment?
The answer? Try co-op or volunteering.
