How Fostering a Dog Changed My Life
In honour of National Pet Day, I decided to share the story of the one and only dog I’ve ever had the chance to call my own. It was October 2021, and for the first time, I made the decision to become a foster dog mom. My parents had decided that we couldn’t adopt a dog because we couldn’t give a full-time commitment, so fostering was a good compromise that allowed me to care for a dog for a short period.
I had been on a foster list for what felt like months before I finally found a match. Her name was Daisy, and she was a black-and-white Shih Tzu. She had some medical issues, but she was absolutely adorable. I emailed to express my interest right away, and to my delight, I received a phone interview a few days later. Before I knew it, she was going to be at my house, and that week felt like the longest wait I’ve ever experienced.
I still remember that day: I had two lectures, an English presentation, and a doctor’s appointment, yet the highlight of my day was when she came home. She was even cuter in person. As we welcomed her, she whined because she wanted to be let out of her crate. As soon as we let her out, she never went back in; she ran around the house, exploring and looking for a place to nestle into for the next month.
